HALO Project

OLEV Research and development fund – HALO Project

We are extremely proud to announce that we will be working with Jaguar Land Rover, FAR-UK, TWI, and HPL Prototypes to help optimise hybrid structures for the automotive sector.

“HALO is exactly the kind of project for which ASDEC was established, working at the cutting edge of automotive materials testing and analysis. Our unique set up of Robotised laser Doppler vibrometer and the ability to provide in-depth analysis of results will give the HALO team unparalleled insight into new hybrid structures and their performance to make them ready for real world applications.”
Tim Stubbs
General Manager at ASDEC

This project will consist of optimising the use of composite material to maximise the efficiency within the structure of vehicles. We will be using our LDV (laser Doppler vibrometry) system to analyse these objects and extrapolate valuable data from real world experiments, which can then in turn be correlated with FEA models. Our state of the art non-destructive testing method will be able to offer better accuracy and more measurements in a shorter amount of time. Using the LDV system also means that the observer effects will be removed since we will not be using traditional transducers which can alter the materials characteristics.

“I am delighted to be working on this new collaboration with industry in the composites area. 3D laser Doppler vibrometry is a non-contact technique which is particularly important in measuring composites where the additional mass from more traditional techniques such as transducers would fundamentally change the vibration of these lightweight structures. Light weighting is such an important technology for cars where savings of even a 100g of mass in a car can save tonnes of CO2 emissions when the number of cars in a fleet is considered”
Professor Sarah Hainsworth
Director of ASDEC

HALO project is funded by Innovate UK to help reduce CO2 emissions of road vehicles.
